The end of book publishing? Or just the opposite?

Amen. Thank you DK.

Why does it take SO LONG?

Here is a link to a really great explanation of why it does take so long for a book to get released from the traditional publisher. This post by Jay Lake, author with Macmillan about all the steps from both his POV and the publisher’s. Twenty six months! That’s a long, long time. But you’ll [...]

A new Author OnLine Directory

A new directory of authors went live in March 2009. Filedby.com Is organized to promote authors not individual titles. In a recent press release from Filedby.Inc of Nashville, TN, the company says:

Conspiracy theorists may now stand down.

What I said in my earlier post still holds true as far as the opinions I hold, especially in regard to morality being a personal responsibility. But we were ALL (and I am pointing mainly at the TWITterers), speculating without hard evidence. We may never get a satisfactory explanation, but I think this pretty much [...]

The future of magazine publishing?

I’m talking about paper magazines here. Little ones with not a big readership. I don’t see Vogue or Cosmo doing this anytime soon. We’ve all seen the booksurge of POD books (pun intended) in recent years, but to me, this is a new twist. A site called MagCloud offers a POD model similar to Amazon’s [...]

Interview with the book designer…

In this interview, Sue Campbell expresses her views on book design, cover design, color, typography, self-publishers the costs and values of professional graphic design, and the state of print design today. She tells about her design process and speculates on the future of printed books.

We are information producers and providers. What’s changing fast is the delivery system and the choices of [...]

“Self-published” Not a dirty word any longer.

Today, the New York Times published an article by Motoko Rich entitled “Self-publishers Flourish as Writers Pay the Tab.” It’s a pretty realistic look at a new world in publishing. Below is my opinion on this situation.
It had to happen, critical mass has been reached. That, and the model practiced by major (mainly New York) [...]

Library Thing

Does anybody use LibraryThing? Well, I know over 500,000 people are signed up, but does anybody here reading this use it? I signed up as a user back in July of 07, and then promptly forgot about it. The idea of entering all my books manually just seemed overwhelming. But now I see that they [...]

What Publishers Want Part II

So given the spirited discussion we had about this subject last Saturday at my Writer’s Meetup group, I encourage those members to listen to this episode of The Writing Show in which Paula B. interviews Jennifer Silva Redmond, Editor-in-Chief of Sunbelt Publications, an award-winning small press that celebrates the natural and cultural history of the [...]
